Today, Mayor McNally and City Councillor Claire Carmelia joined GFiber to break ground on a new fiber optic network in the Sheridan Green neighborhood. Westminster is the second city in Colorado to receive GFiber service.
The expanded service is a crucial step towards increasing digital access and brings more competition, choice, and affordability for Westminster residents. Construction will run through 2025, and residents may see work occurring along the public right-of-way. GFiber will use micro-trenching along the public side of the street to minimize impact to the community during construction.
Westminster Assistant City Engineer Seth Plas said bringing fiber internet service to the city has been a multi-year process that required collaboration from various departments to ensure safety and minimize disruptions during construction.
“When these fiber companies first approached the City, there was not a suitable process to accommodate this large deployment effort of new fiber infrastructure,” Plas said. “It was clear that these services would be a benefit to the community, so city staff in the City Manager’s Office, Public Works & Utilities, City Attorney’s Office, and Community Services worked quickly and thoughtfully to create a unique agreement and permitting structure to facilitate any new fiber company constructing large-scale deployments in the city.”
In addition to GFiber, Metronet, Intrepid is also expanding high-speed, fiber optic internet service for residents and businesses, and further narrow the digital divide for our community.
“Successful installation of these networks should mean better competition for fast, reliable internet to enhance the quality of life for the residents and businesses in Westminster,” Plas said.
GFiber has worked closely with the City to develop communications materials to inform neighborhoods, including a construction hotline, door hangers, signage, and communications to stakeholders such as homeowners’ associations and neighborhood groups.
